Yorkshire Housing reconfirm eviction pledge and support for customers

We know people are worried about rising prices and the cost of living. We want to reassure our customers that if they’re struggling to pay their rent and they speak to us about their money worries they will not face eviction.

The eviction pledge, backed by the National Housing Federation, was first made at the start of the pandemic and was established as a permanent pledge last summer.

As part of the pledge Yorkshire Housing commit to:

1. Keeping customers secure at home

No one will be evicted from their home as a result of financial hardship, where they are working (or engaging) with us to get their payments back on track.

2. Helping customers to get the support they need

We’re helping customers to access benefits and other support to reduce financial hardship, including supporting people to get into work where possible. We’ve also launched our #HelpOut campaign that’s making sure customers know where to go for support and advice with the cost of living.

3. Acting compassionately and quickly where customers are struggling

We’ll work with customers who are struggling to pay their rent to make arrangements that are manageable for them in the long term. Legal action will only be taken in serious circumstances – for example as a last resort where a customer won’t agree a plan with us to pay their rent, or where it’s needed urgently in cases of domestic abuse or antisocial behaviour that’s putting other customers or communities at risk.

Suzanne Wicks, executive director of customer experience, said:

“People are worried about rising costs and are struggling to cover the basics like rent, food, and energy bills. That’s why we want to reassure our customers that we’re here to help and listen to their concerns and that they won’t be evicted if they’re struggling to pay their rent.

“Evictions are always a last resort and are only carried out in the most serious circumstances, such as in cases of antisocial behaviour that puts other customers at risk. Our money and tenancy coaching teams are just a phone call away and are ready to support people who are struggling to pay their bills.

“We want our customers to know that we’re here to help so please get in touch with us if you have money worries.”
