We’re supporting Starts at Home Day - a national campaign to highlight the value of supported housing and the difference it makes to people’s lives.
Supported housing provides safe, secure homes for people who need some extra help to live independently. That includes older people, those with disabilities, and others who benefit from day-to-day support.
The campaign is calling on the government to protect supported housing, which continues to face challenges due to funding pressures. According to the National Housing Federation, without this kind of housing:
- 41,000 more people could face homelessness
- There would be a big increase in delayed hospital discharges and pressure on health and social care
That’s why we’re backing #StartsAtHomeDay, because we know how essential supported housing is, and we’ve seen the impact first-hand.
We run two Extra Care schemes - Deansfield Court in Norton near Malton, and Sherwood Court in Kettlethorpe near Wakefield. These are modern, purpose-built homes where our customers have their own apartments and can live independently, with care and support available 24/7 if and when they need it.
Our Extra Care schemes offer more than just housing. They’re supportive communities that help people stay connected, reduce isolation, and live well in later life. Customers can enjoy their own space and routines, while also having access to shared spaces, activities, and personalised care when needed.
We also provide independent living schemes for people over 55 across Yorkshire. These are usually one or two-bedroom flats or bungalows designed to help people carry on living independently, with extras that make life that bit easier. Emergency support is available 24/7 if needed, and our scheme managers make sure everything runs smoothly.
One of the things our customers value most is the sense of community. From day trips and coffee mornings to craft sessions and social events, there’s always something to get involved in if you’d like to. Our homes are available for low-cost rent, whether someone is retired, working, or looking for work, and they’re ideal for both couples and single people.
Sarah Evans, Executive Director of Customer Experience at Yorkshire Housing, said:
“We see every day how important supported housing is for our customers. It gives them the confidence, independence and stability to live well on their own terms. Extra Care isn’t just a service; it’s a lifeline for so many people. That’s why we’re behind the campaign, to make sure supported housing gets the recognition and support it deserves.”
