A new service for past members of the armed forces who are aged over 65 has been launched. The Aged Veterans Funding project aims to raise awareness of the issues veterans face later in life and give a rounded support service.

The service offers tailored support to help ex-forces personnel lead fuller and more independent lives. This might include home visits to look at improvement adaptations, healthy lifestyle courses, social and new activities, befriending, volunteering and help and advice for care workers and families.

Yorkshire Housing’s Home Improvement Agency is supporting the project in partnership with 14 other charities and contributes intensively to home visits and adaptation areas of the service.

Veterans aged 65 or older are eligible, as well as anyone that has completed National Service or has supported the armed forces in other areas such as the Merchant Navy. The project will last three years and covers the North Yorkshire area.

Head of home improvement agency Jo Irving said: “We’re delighted to be part of the project. Our particular brand of support will be able to help veterans across North Yorkshire to stay independent in their homes while being safe, secure and warm.”
