Yorkshire Housing has been highly commended in the large employer of the year category at the government-backed National Apprenticeship Awards – after winning the Yorkshire, Humber and North East regional category.
We’ve has also been named as a top 100 apprenticeship employer.
Judges were impressed that our programme has supported apprentices to move into graduate-level jobs and that 70 per cent of apprentices remain employed with Yorkshire Housing after their placement finishes.
We’ve continually increased the support we offers our apprentices –last year we introduced a six-month project-based skills programme which saw them take on real business challenges with key skills master classes and support from mentors.
Director of property services and apprenticeship ambassador David Bolton said: “We’re really pleased to have received national recognition for the quality of our apprenticeship programme – we were competing with some big players across a range of sectors.
“Initially we offered apprenticeships to help people to take the first steps towards employment and a career. We’ve now realised that not only does the programme offer these opportunities but it also has massive benefits for Yorkshire Housing. It attracts highly engaged, talented and innovative individuals – our apprentices have the potential to be our future leaders.
“We certainly won’t be resting on our laurels through – we’ve got big plans to develop our programme further over the next year by trialling higher apprentices and looking at how we can open up more opportunities to current employees looking to develop new skills.”
Since the programme started in 2008 Yorkshire Housing has recruited 89 apprentices across the organisation, at the moment it employs 25 apprentices in roles based across Yorkshire.
Director of the National Apprenticeship Service Sue Husband said “The National Apprenticeship Awards enable talented apprentices and committed employers to receive the recognition they truly deserve – celebrating the achievements of apprentices and businesses and allowing them to gain the credit for investing in their own futures, whilst driving up quality and encouraging others to get involved.”
