It’s been good helping some of our customers become pen pals. I’ve got such happy memories of writing to friends I’d made on holiday when I was younger. It was so exciting finding a letter from a pen pal in the post, much better than the usual bills!

Connecting customers in different sheltered schemes was suggested by our scheme managers to help tackle the loneliness of lockdown.

We put out a call in our newsletter asking if customers would like to be matched with a pen friend. It was initially anonymous, and they could opt to keep in touch by post or email. After a trial period they could decide if they’d like to swap details.

It’s been a success and most of the pen pals have decided to stay in touch. They’ve said it’s been nice to have someone to write to and they’ve enjoyed finding out more about their pen friends. One customer said his pen pal studies electronics and is even writing a book. Another customer said writing to their friend has helped them improve their writing and spelling.

As a thank you for taking part in the trial, we sent the pen friends who are staying in touch some lovely packs of writing paper and envelopes. I admit this gave me stationary envy!

Even with restrictions lifting we’d love to match up more customers. If you’d like a new pen friend get in touch on 07867 138707 or email me on georgia.irving@yorkshirehousing.co.uk and I’ll see what we can do.

Happy writing,

Georgia
