Fatou was first introduced to Yorkshire Housing’s community investment team when she took part in a nail technician course in York and met with employment advisor Jennie Ironmonger.

During the short course, she impressed her tutors greatly with her natural talent for the work and it was suggested she should enrol on a vocational-related qualification (VRQ) level 2 in Beauty Therapy where she could further her skillset.

Fatou’s employment advisor was able to help her apply for Yorkshire Housing’s training grant to cover her tuition fees – having previously completed a level 2 qualification, Fatou was not eligible to receive funding for this course from the government.

As a YH customer, Fatou was eligible to apply for up to £500 to support her through the course, as well as one-to-one support from the community investment team’s employment and business coaches.

Fatou said: “I feel like the day I met Jennie and her team was my lucky day. Yorkshire Housing has been hugely supportive all the way through my journey from the short course in York right through to heading back to college. I couldn’t have done it without the grant, it made it possible to develop a skill which has being my passion for years.”

Following her graduation from the course, Fatou will be qualified to gain employment in a beauty spa or start her own business – throughout which she will be supported by Yorkshire Housing’s community investment team.

Fatou added: “I can’t wait to be up and running in a role which fits more kindly with my family life too, Yorkshire Housing has given me hope again and I have a lot to thank the team for.”
