Work restarts on our gas-free development in North Yorkshire

After two years on pause, work has restarted on our new development in Amotherby, which is shaping up to be our second gas-free site.

Together with our construction partner Lindum Group, we’re building 58 new homes for affordable rent, social rent and shared ownership. Each one’s designed to be warmer, greener and cheaper to run, with air source heat pumps, solar panels and extra insulation doing the heavy lifting instead of gas.

We’re putting sustainability front and centre too. Lindum Group are working with local suppliers and tradespeople and finding clever ways to keep carbon down - including van sharing and using responsibly sourced materials.

Before we could get going again, archaeologists from MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd carried out a full excavation of the site. They found Anglo-Saxon and Roman artefacts, which caught the attention of pupils from Amotherby Primary School, who came along to learn more about the area’s fascinating history! Take a look at the photos below:

Here's what our Head of Construction, Anthony Askew, said after visiting the site last week:

“Seeing the progress has been fantastic! It’s a great example of teamwork between Yorkshire Housing and our construction partner, Lindum.

“This development is on track to be our second gas-free site, using modern construction methods and renewable technology to create warm, efficient homes that are better for people and the planet. This is all part of Yorkshire Housing's journey to net-zero, which is driving innovation in how we build homes across the region.

“Amotherby is proof that we can build high-quality homes without relying on gas. We're really looking forward to seeing how it progresses over the next few months.”

James Nellist, Lindum York Managing Director, added:

“As a local York-based contractor employing local supply chain partners and our own directly employed labour on our projects, we are delighted to have started this very important development for the area.

“Affordable housing is one of the key issues we are facing nationally, so it is significant that we can deliver these homes to do our bit to help support our local communities.

“We have a fantastic team working on this site to produce the best quality, efficient homes, for those looking to get on the property ladder or looking for affordable rent.”

Once complete, the Saxon Fields development will bring much-needed, sustainable homes to North Yorkshire, providing more people with affordable, energy-efficient places to live.

The development is due to be completed in 2027.
