From apprentice to fully fledged electrician: my journey with Yorkshire Housing

Hi, I’m Stephanie, and 15 years ago I started out as an apprentice with Yorkshire Housing. Here’s a bit about my journey and why it was the best move for my career.

Starting out as an apprentice can be a daunting experience, but at Yorkshire Housing it was a journey full of equal opportunities, growth, and learning.

I applied to over 40 different companies for an apprenticeship, but Yorkshire Housing was the only one that believed in me and offered me an interview. When I arrived, I was welcomed just like any other new starter and the electricians took the time to help me understand the daily tasks.

In my second year I was contracted to an outside company, giving me the opportunity to work on new build homes, extensions, and loft conversions. Yorkshire Housing also encouraged me to get my driving licence, allowing me to be mobile, assist other electricians and make deliveries.

In the 15 years that I’ve been with Yorkshire Housing, I’ve completed my 4-year apprenticeship with AM2, been put through my test and inspection 2391 course and exam (which I passed first time – yay!) and now I’m an approved electrician. Over the years I’ve also done many certifications all paid for by Yorkshire Housing – which includes PAT testing, electric vehicle chargers and current regulations.

I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved over the years, which I couldn’t have done without the amazing support from colleagues that spent their time to help train me alongside their day jobs. Every job I complete is a proud moment and the customers’ satisfaction is always a bonus!

If you’re thinking of applying to become an apprentice with Yorkshire Housing – I would totally recommend it! The learning environment is friendly, encouraging, supportive, rewarding, and interesting. Plus - the benefits include their amazing workspace “The Place”, a generous pension scheme and so much more.

My advice to any future or current apprentices would be to show enthusiasm, ask questions, have a good sense of humour, be helpful and make a good brew!
