Tenancy policy – key points

Tenancy types and when we will use them:

Assured (non-shorthold) periodic: Used for existing social rent tenants transferring to another Yorkshire Housing home or upon successful completion of a starter tenancy period.

Starter tenancies: These are Assured Shorthold Periodic Tenancies for an initial period of twelve months. Used for tenants moving into a social rented home.

Assured Shorthold (AST) periodic: These tenancies are normally for an initial period of six months. These are used for market rent tenancies and for social rent in limited circumstances such as where Yorkshire Housing leases the property.

Contractual Tenancies: These tenancies are used where a Yorkshire Housing tenant has moved temporarily from their home for situations such as major works projects.

Secure Tenancies: As a housing association Yorkshire Housing cannot grant secure tenancies, however we do have some secure tenants that have been with Yorkshire Housing since before January 15, 1989.

Tenancies for minors: Tenants aged 16 or 17 years old can enter into an agreement with Yorkshire Housing by way of a periodic Assured Shorthold Tenancy. This tenancy will be held on Trust by a third party until the tenant reaches the age of 18 years.
