Reducing the amount of rubbish we throw away, reusing what we can and recycling as much as possible… these are things that we can all do to help the environment.

To find out what recycling facilities are available from your home and in your local area, visit the Recycle Now website and simply enter your postcode.

We should all try to recycle as much rubbish as possible, because:

  1. Recycling Conserves Resources
When we recycle, the material is used again to make a new product – for example, when a newspaper is recycled it is made into new paper products such as magazines, toilet roll and new newspapers. This means that new raw materials do not need to be extracted through mining and forestry.
  2. Recycling Saves Energy
Using recycled materials to make new products saves lots of energy. Even when the amount of energy used to recycle materials is considered (e.g. involved in transport, etc) recycling saves energy because it takes so much energy to mine, quarry, transport and process raw materials.
  3. Recycling Helps Protect the Environment
Recycling reduces pollution from mining and quarrying and saves trees from being cut down. As recycling saves energy it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which helps to tackle climate change.
  4. Recycling Reduces Landfill
When we recycle we reduce the amount of rubbish that ends up in landfill sites. There are over 1,500 landfill sites in the UK, and many of them will soon be full to capacity… what will we do with our rubbish then?
