Tackling Anti-Social Behaviour
Yorkshire Housing Group (YHG) believes that everyone has a right to live peacefully and quietly. Yet anti-social behaviour (ASB) affects many people, their families and their lives. It can blight neighbourhoods, give them a bad name and be part of a spiral of decay and decline.
Social landlords’ powers

YHG welcomes the powers given to social landlords by the Anti Social Behaviour Act 2003 and uses them to take effective action to help customers, tenants and local residents make a stand against ASB.
However, we recognise that ASB is not just about enforcement. We aim to work hard with partner agencies to prevent ASB in the first place and, where it has happened, to rebuild peaceful and understanding communities.
We provide homes across all parts of Yorkshire, from rural villages in the north of the county to the inner cities in the west and south and ASB takes place in some form or other in all the areas. How often and how bad it is may vary but the impact on people’s lives, families and communities is the same.
What we use to tackle ASB
We have been actively tackling ASB across the Group with external agencies and partners and have used:
- Anti Social Behaviour Orders (ASBOs)
- Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs)
- Parenting Orders
- Injunctions
- Mediation
- Eviction
As from April 2006 YHG has been given approval to use Starter Tenancies and Demoted Tenancies. Starter Tenancies will only be used in certain areas, but a Demoted Tenancy can be applied to ANY tenantwho is involved in anti-social behaviour.
Building positive communities
Finally, by working with community groups and others to prevent ASB and to promote respect, we hope to build communities where people have a stake in that community, have a future to look forward to and will not tolerate ASB.
