Homelessness and Housing Advice
Please Note:
This service applies only to Yorkshire Housing customers living in the Craven District Council Local Authority
Are you homeless?
Most people think that being homeless means sleeping on the street, but this isn't the case. You can still be homeless if you have accommodation, but you have no rights to stay there, or it is unsuitable for you to stay there.
You can be homeless for many different reasons which could include:
- Suffering Domestic Violence or harassment
- Being asked to leave by your parents or landlord
- Leaving the armed forces, prison or hospital
- Getting into rent or mortgage arrears
- Your relationship has broken down
- Health problems
If you are homeless, or worried about becoming homeless, then you should get advice as soon as you can. The earlier you get advice then the less likely you are to lose your accommodation.
How we can help you
We will try where possible to prevent you becoming homeless, or if you have already lost your accommodation we may be able to help you move back into your home. Some of the things that the Housing Options team can do include:
- Referring young people and their families for mediation
- Liasing with private landlords over notices
- Assistance through the Homeless Prevention Fund
- Offer advice about mortgage rescue, for example: Housing and the Credit Crunch
More information about these and other homeless prevention initiatives can be found on Craven District Council's website
What to do if you think you are homeless
Get in touch with the Housing Options Team as soon as possible. You can either call into our office at 62 Newmarket Street, Skipton, or ring us on 01756 704500. If you are homeless out of office hours, please ring 01282 661999
We will go through your situation with you to see what options are available and which ones are best for you, including helping you find a way to stay in your home and avoid becoming homeless. If there is no way to prevent you from becoming homeless an officer will assess your homelessness situation and decide whether you are priority homeless or not.
Read Craven Council's housing FAQs for questions that are asked on a regular basis. If you cannot see the question you are looking for or require further information please do not hesitate to contact the Housing Options Team at Yorkshire Housing.
