Tenants’ and residents’ associations (TARAS)
Tenants’ and residents’ associations (TARAS) are perhaps the best-known form of tenant involvement and have been in existence in various forms for over one hundred years.
They are formed by tenants and residents in a particular area – usually a housing estate or a street – getting together and electing a committee of representatives to form a TARA which will act on their behalf with any dealings with the housing association.
They can take quite a bit of work to set up and run, but a successful TARA can make a real difference in tackling problems like anti-social behavior and in building a strong and supportive community.
The Federation Forum Link-Up Association
This body (known as FFLUA) was set up by tenants to provide an independent umbrella organisation for all the different tenant groups across the Yorkshire Metropolitan Housing.
It aims to provide a strong, united voice for tenants and to promote greater and more effective tenant participation.

Yorkshire Housing Tenants Focus Group
The Yorkshire Housing Tenant Focus Group consists of tenant members from Ryedale Housing Association and Yorkshire Metropolitan Housing Association, who have joined together to work in partnership with staff, tenants and residents to improve services, quality of life and promote sustainable communities.
The Groups aims are to:
- Create new and innovative opportunities for all tenants and residents to be involved.
- Create minimum standards of tenant and resident involvement across the Yorkshire Housing Group.
- Achieve value for money.
