Sustainable Housing Projects
We support the development of sustainable and inclusive communities, and are committed to ensuring that our regeneration and home improvement activities promote sustainable communities.
Yorkshire Housing has committed to provide homes with the highest energy efficiency standards possible, and aims to tackle fuel poverty by reducing running costs for customers and residents by reducing energy consumption in their homes.
Horseman Avenue, York
- South facing with large glass frontages to harness the suns warming power
- Void area in the property allows heat to circulate naturally warming the air in the open space
- warm air then dissipates throughout the home thus reduing fuel bills and CO2 emissions
Primrose Hill, Huddersfield
- High level of thermal insulation (30% improvement in thermal performance over a standard property)
- Solar water heating - up to 25-33% of hot water usage
- Photovoltaic cells - around 25% of electrical energy use
- 40-50% of energy costs saved over a standard property
Outwood Ghost, Wakefield
- Solar water heating which will provide 75% of peoples hot water needs
- Rainwater recycling
- Highly energy efficient and airtight construction
New standards for building homes have been adopted by the Homes & Communities Agency, the body that funds the majority of our new build schemes. From now on all new homes built by Yorkshire Housing will receive a code rating 3 or above under The Code for Sustainable Homes.
The Code for Sustainable Homes is a new tool to assess the environmental performance of new-build homes. It enables housing developers to measure and improve the design specification and construction quality of homes against a nationally recognised rating, contributing to the achievement of sustainable development, by:
- Providing a better quality of life for people. Homes built are more accessible and are easily adaptable to meet the changing needs of current and future occupants.
- Protecting wildlife. Development is discouraged on land which is valuable to plants and animals.
- Reducing pollution. Energy efficient appliances and lighting and good insulation are included to reduce energy costs and reduce CO2 emissions.
The benefits of the code will not only better the environment but also make homes cheaper to live in.
