Pre-Payment Meters
Many people, often those on low incomes, use pre-payment meters to pay for their gas and electricity. Customers who pay for their energy using pre-payment meters can end up paying £70 more a year than customers who pay by standard quarterly bills, and up to £300 more than customers on the best on-line direct debit tariffs.
The government has said that it wants a better deal for customers on pre-payment meters. In his budget speech the Chancellor Alistair Darling called on the energy suppliers and Ofgem to come up with a fairer solution. It is crucial that the Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks MP acts on this before the winter sets in.
The National Housing Association (NHA) is coordinating Energy Action Week (1-5 September 2008) to encourage people to speak out against the high prices charged to customers who purchase their gas and electricity using pre-payments meters. The NHA is asking people to write to their local MPs to end this unfairness.
