Julia Tipling, Housing Apprentice
Julia, 19, was studying Equine Management at Craven College, when she took up an apprenticeship with Yorkshire Housing as a Housing Apprentice.
“When I was younger I had originally looked at becoming a vet or a future working with animals, but after a year on the college course I decided I needed a change and wanted to get out and start working.”
Julia attended a meet and greet session with Yorkshire Housing’s Employment & Opportunities Co-ordinator, Gillian Robinson, to learn more about becoming a neighbourhood officer.
“I knew a bit about what being a Neighbourhood Officer entails, I live in a Yorkshire Housing property so I know about the organisation and who my local Neighbourhood Officer is.”
Julia’s day to day duties include visiting tenants, shadowing neighbourhood officers, uploading applications, working with other teams in the organisation and checking repairs work
“I really like the variety of my job as there is no set routine, every day is different!”
Case Study
Rachel Dunn, Resources Business Administrator Apprentice
Rachel Dunn, 18, from Bradford had just completed her college course when she joined Yorkshire Housing as an Apprentice in Business Administration. Rachel had previously been studying medical science and had planned a career in medicine.
“I was planning on going to university, but because of the proposed changes in course fees and the way things are at the moment all the course places filled up fast. I decided to rethink my options and the opportunities available and decided an apprenticeship would be the way forward for me.
“There are lots of apprenticeships available at the moment, it was my mum that pointed out the apprentice scheme at Yorkshire Housing, and it seemed like a great opportunity as it offered a qualification and lots of variety.
“My apprenticeship with Yorkshire Housing will give me an NVQ in Business Administration and I also get to experience the full resources side of the business. My apprenticeship gives me a taster of each department for three months. I’m currently working with the Finance team, but then I will go to the IT department, Human Resources and Communications.
“I really like the team I’m working with and I’m looking forward to picking up lots of great skills as I work across the organisation.”
Case Study
Tom Betts, Apprentice Plumber
Tom has been an apprentice with Yorkshire Housing for two years. He works with the YH HomeWorks team in Bradford as a plumber and does study days at college too.
Tom says,
"I have enjoyed my apprenticeship at YH. I have received good training both at work and at college and I feel well prepared for my future career. Other apprentices at college ask me if YH has any vacancies because they can see what a good apprenticeship programme I have."
